A Web Design’s Focus Should Be On Mobile…

We all know that the cellphone and its mobile capabilities have swept the world by storm over the last two decades.  Mobile devices help keep us connected to the things we care about! They can help make us more accessible, more productive, more social and more knowledgeable. For example, I bet that the majority of everyone reading this has either received a call, checked an email, read the news, shopped, visited a social platform or googled something that they didn’t know on a mobile device in the last 24 hours.  If your own personal behavior, in regards to mobile device usage, isn’t enough to illustrate the importance of a mobile friendly Web Site and you need a little more data for the argument then please continue reading.

Did you know that more people in the world own a mobile device than own a toothbrush? According to the Mobile Marketing Association, in 2011 4.1 billion people owned a toothbrush in the world, while 4.8 billion owned a mobile phone.  When I initially read this statistic, I thought yuck and that is unbelievable.  It really shocked me but as I continued my research on mobile usage and mobile internet penetration that statistic became much more realistic.

Mobile internet usage has continued to grow year over year as desktop usage has suffered a relative steady decline. Data compiled from Stat shows the average growth rate each year in mobile usage at 6.7%.  At this rate of growth, within 5 years more than half of all internet access will be from a mobile platform.

Digging in to the research a little deeper, I began compiling a month’s worth of usage data from 12 external facing websites that utilize Google Analytics for traffic tracking. This compiled data shows; 21% of all traffic and 24% of all new visits to these sites came from a mobile platform during the month of February.

This snap shot of the client’s current internet traffic does appear to accurately confirm the stats and trends proposed through other research.

  • Below are a few other mind boggling mobile statistics that I just couldn’t help but share:
  • According to the United Nations, more people in India have access to mobile phones than toilets
  • 91% of all people on earth have a mobile phone
  • 50% of mobile phone users, use mobile as their primary Internet source
  • 72% of tablet owners purchase online from their tablets each week
  • Mobile internet adoption is growing 8 times faster than internet adoption in the 90’s
  • 39% of all emails are opened on a mobile device
  • Smartphones are spreading faster than any technology in human history—global smartphone activations outnumber global child births by three to one
  • Consumers spend more than 23 percent of their daily media consumption time with mobile

With all of this data and the expected future growth for mobile internet usage; how can mobile design and functionality not be of the highest priority?
