Microsoft BI – Power BI Powers Up with Datazen!

On April 14th, Microsoft announced that they had acquired Datazen Software.  This acquisition will change the game for Microsoft and its current BI offering.  If you do Dashboards, mobile, have on-premise data, and want a new, free component to create electric and sexy touch data visualizations – Datazen is for you.

Here is a short clip from the announcement on the Microsoft blog:

“Today I am excited to announce the acquisition of Datazen Software, an industry leader in mobile business intelligence and data visualization on Windows, iOS and Android devices. This acquisition accelerates our Power BI strategy to help organizations create a data culture with easy-to-use, accessible tools to extract maximum value from data – from anywhere, on any device.”

There are two keys items to pay attention to in this short paragraph:

      1.       Accelerates our Power BI strategy

       2.       Accessible tools

The first item to note is that this new tool DOES NOT replace Power BI.  It is going to work in conjunction with Power BI.

Everyone who sees Power BI loves it for the simplicity and capabilities it provides to the end user.  Immediately with little start up knowledge you can create a dashboard from your data that rocks.  The issue is the data we have is on-premise.  Companies can utilize the Data Management Gateway to surface on-premise data in 365 but that’s another tool to govern and requires licensing to Power BI.

That is where the second key comes into play: Accessible tool.

For over a decade customers have loved that when they buy SQL Server they get SSIS, SSAS, SSRS.  Now, for free you get Datazen. Being a cynic (Where is the catch?) I had a hard time believing this and wrote to their sales department and got the following personal message:

“As a result of the acquisition, if you have Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or later Enterprise Edition and Software Assurance you are entitled to download the Datazen Server software at no additional cost.”

I have a lot more to say about Datazen but to whet your appetite for how earth shattering their tool is check out the following dashboard from their gallery:

It is beautiful.  But everyone shows beautiful dashboards, right?  Yes, but, the difference here is that you can modify this and use your own data (on-premise) and mold and brand this design.  Or use it as is with your data.  Don’t lose sight of the fact that this works in mobile!
